Individual Activity/Case Study

Task Description

You are required to examine three case studies on Kellogg’s.

You are also required to research on Kellogg’s to analyse the current trends, environment and technological advances that affect their business.

You will then provide answers to all the questions below.

Procedure:

  • You must read all the three case studies provided by your trainer:
  • “Building a better workplace through motivation”
  • “A Closed-Loop Returns Management System, Turing Failures into Profits”
  • “Supply chain from manufacturing to shelf”
  • Analyse the cases carefully and then answer the following questions:
  • Please note that you may also want to access Kellogg’s website for more information about its company and also conduct further research on Kellogg’s in order to answer the questions below.

  • Describe how Kellogg’s manages the distribution channels.
  • Marketing/Sales/Quality – The rates of expired products at retail were calculated to show executives and technical disciplines the relationship of ship life, shelf life, and product sales velocity.

Mathematical models of ship life, shelf life, and expired product were developed for different products, SKU’s and sales channels to project expired product costs and recommend improvements to the model. The annual savings that could be obtained by lengthening shelf life or restricting ship life could be calculated.

  • How does Kellogg’s ensure that they are distributing the correct amount of stock?
  • A scorecard system was implemented that measured and ranked manufacturing plants and distribution centers on an ongoing basis.

  • How is the effectiveness of their supply chain monitored and measured?
  • Kellogg’s collected data for two years to establish a baseline before attempting to make any significant changes. Having converted the data into information and knowledge, it became evident that there was an opportunity to put measurements in place in key areas.

ignificant changes. Having converted the data into information and knowledge, it became evident that there was an opportunity to put measurements in place in key areas.

  • How does the use of TDG benefit Kellogg’s?
  • TDG uses its hi-cube vehicles and warehousing network to find practical ways to consolidate Kellogg’s orders and delivery schedules without impacting on customer service expectations across their individual bases

  • Summarise how Kellogg’s motivates their employees.
  • To get the internal support. If issues can be identified and measured from a financial return on investment perspective, functional silo barriers can be overcome. Each functional unit has to support the overall business to prove its value. Measuring performance and assigning a financial impact to each area’s performance creates a culture of awareness and accountability.

  • How does Kellogg’s encourage innovation from their employees?

  • How does Kellogg’s promote interaction between various work groups / business and therefore foster organisational learning?
  • Progressive manufacturers and customers will work together to improve their Supply Chain processes to increase profitability and efficiencies. This should be referred to as Trading Partner Profitability. Employing an effective Returns Management operation will be essential to the process.

  • Explain how the Closed-Loop Supply Chain works.
  • Kellogg’s set a goal to just reduce unsaleable, the goal became to increase profitability. Profitability in terms of achieving objectives to improve process efficiencies, improves customer and consumer satisfaction, and reduces costs for both Kellogg’s and their customers. With results that made such a huge difference and gave unsaleable management the long overdue visibility, this innovative approach called the Closed-Loop Returns Management System will likely become the new model for unsaleables reduction. Make that increased profitability
