  • How can the leaders assist the employees during an internal change?
  • 1. Communicate. Leaders who explained the purpose of the change and connected it to the organization’s values or explained the benefits created stronger buy-in and urgency for the change.

    2. Collaborate. Bringing people together to plan and execute change is critical. Successful leaders worked across boundaries, encouraged employees to break out of their silos, and refused to tolerate unhealthy competition change.

    3. Commit. Successful leaders made sure their own beliefs and behaviors supported change, too. Change is difficult, but leaders who negotiated it successfully were resilient and persistent, and willing to step outside their comfort zone.

  • What can the leadership team do when a workplace is faced with unplanned external change?
  • Successful leaders developed a strategy and a clear action plan, including priorities, timelines, tasks, structures, behaviors, and resources. They identified what would change, but also what would stay the same. Leaders who weren’t successful said they failed to listen enough to questions and concerns, and failed to define success from the beginning.

  • Draw a comparison between the roles of managers and leaders during a change.
  • Managers and supervisors are crucial because of the relationship they have with the employees in the organization. They are positioned to coach and influence employees through their own change process.

Leaders provide the motivation to change and get people involved. They create a sense of urgency and importance about the change, and show commitment and passion about getting things done.

  • How can change be effectively implemented in the workplace?
  • Clarify the vision and communicate it effectively. The role of leadership in change management requires that you help people buy into your vision for the organization.

Stay connected with your employees. Without this awareness, you’ll have a difficult time explaining your vision and enlisting support.

Be accountable and transparent. During times of change, leaders must be accountable for what is working and what isn’t working.
